Required materials: sketchbook and access to basic household art supplies, such as pencils, rulers, pens, crayons/colored pencils/markers, erasers, and pencil sharpeners

Course description:
The scope of this class will focus on the “building blocks” of art and does not necessarily require a lot of artistic skill to participate, although it will certainly be helpful if the student has an interest in drawing and a desire to build their skill.

This course can will be conducted at the level of skill and means each individual student has, so if so if (for example) a student has a set of oil pastels they would like to use in class, they are more than welcome to use them. However, the student who only has crayons will not be required to use the more expensive materials.

Over the course of the class, we will discuss the Principles of Art, as well as touching on other areas of artistic practice such as sketchbook practice and how to conduct critiques.

A rough overview of topics taught in class: Balance, Contrast, Rhythm, Repetition, Emphasis, Movement, Unity/Variety, Pattern

Class time will consist of Lecture (introduction/discussing the topic), Project Introduction, and Critique (class feedback on projects and work).

During class, Miss Elizabeth will present all information and conduct group critiques in a constructive, kind way, as well as provide verbal feedback. After class, she will provide written feedback on sketchbook pages and answer questions from students throughout the week.

Assignment expectations: Each week students will create two sketchbook pages, one in class simply practicing the concept learned, and one (small) art piece utilizing the concept. The amount of work is flexible and can be adapted for the scope of the class: for younger students, only the practice page will be required, but older students will add on a third personal sketchbook page to teach individual sketchbook practice. Potential written assignments: 1-2 papers. Amount of homework not to exceed ~2 hours/week.

Individualized private tutoring may be available as an add-on.

Online classes meet via Zoom, and homework will be assigned and submitted via Google Classroom.

No refunds unless the class is canceled. If a student is unable to complete the class for some reason, they will still have access to the weekly videos. :)
