Using Magic Tree House: High Tide in Hawaii as the anchor text, this course focuses on developing core reading abilities through the Science of Reading approach. Each week, students will participate in engaging lessons that target the following skills:
-
Phonemic Awareness: Strengthening the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words, such as blending sounds to make words and segmenting words into individual sounds.
-
Phonics: Understanding the relationship between letters and sounds, allowing students to decode words and build word recognition skills that are vital for reading fluency.
-
Vocabulary Development: Expanding vocabulary by focusing on meaning and usage of words in context, understanding word families, and making connections to enhance comprehension.
-
Reading Fluency: Practicing reading smoothly, accurately, and with appropriate expression. Students will improve their ability to read with proper pacing and rhythm, ensuring they understand and enjoy what they read.
-
Comprehension Strategies: Using strategies such as predicting, summarizing, making inferences, and identifying key details to deepen students' understanding of texts and strengthen their ability to think critically about what they read.
This course is ideal for students who are already reading independently but are still building foundational skills and comprehension. It’s designed to help strengthen reading confidence and deepen understanding of texts in a fun and supportive environment. It pairs perfectly with the Writing Foundations program for a well-rounded literacy experience, but can also be taken separately as a stand-alone course to focus on writing skills.
Individualized private tutoring may be available as an add-on.
Online classes meet via Zoom.
No refunds unless the class is canceled. If a student is unable to complete the class for some reason, they will still have access to the weekly videos. :)
