The purchase of this course will entitle one student to attend and participate in LIVE instructional classes.
The Structure & Style program appeals to both eager writers and reluctant writers by first exploring a variety of subjects that keep the student engaged and also shifting between creative storytelling and formal essay writing every few weeks. Both tactics make this course ideal for maintaining student excitement and engagement.
For this course, the instructor will give LIVE instruction covering the week’s assignment. This interactive course allows students to engage in a classroom setting with their peers and receive immediate feedback on questions before they embark on their latest writing adventure. While this class will progress through the course syllabus, the instructor reserves the option to adjust the pace to accommodate the needs of the class. The ultimate goal is mastery of presented skills, not 100% completion of the course. Rest assured that your student will finish the year equipped with the foundation needed for Level B of the Structure & Style program.
All assignments must be typed, either by the student or a parent. Parents are responsible for editing rough drafts for spelling and punctuation; final grades are based solely on the student's completion of the checklist. Student submissions will be returned to students with instructor notes to help guide student growth in the course.
IEW utilizes a highly acclaimed writing method that benefits young writers by employing a logical system that makes structure easy to understand so that a student’s “style” or creativity develops naturally. The organization of materials also follows the mastery approach: EZ+1. Students refer to checklists throughout so that everyone has the tools to achieve 100% on every assignment.
Susan Barton recommends this writing program for dyslexic students as well. While all students benefit from parental involvement, children with learning challenges will need extra parental support at home; I suggest these parents attend classes alongside their children.
